Chicago Ques: Omega Day Of Service

Sean Long

In Psalms 133, King David wrote: “How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity”.  When he wrote that, he was looking at the 12 tribes of Israel coming together as one.  In Corinthians 12:14 states: “The body is not supported by one person, but by all of us. We are one, we are strongest working together in unity. Teamwork is the key to living life in harmony, so that we can do God's will.

On Saturday, June 13, the Mighty Men of Omega Psi Fraternity came together to do God’s Will.  The were Brothers from 1959 to the Neos of 2020, there were Undergrad and Graduate Brothers, of course there was the 10th D, but there was also the 5th D, 6th, 7th D, and 8th D Brothers.  There were Brothers from LA to Brothers who lived in the neighborhood.  There was former DR, Hon. Steve Waktins, Chapter Basileis from Iota, Sigma Omega, Mu Xi, Nu Pi, Rho Gamma Gamma, Chi Lambda Lambda, and Omicron Mu Mu.  There was 7th Ward Alderman, Bro. Greg Mitchell.  There was State Reps, Bro. Clevon Davis, Bro. Rick Williams, and Bro. Reggie Holiday.  There was Bro. Richard Keller, Tenth District Chaplain.  There were AKA’s, Delta’s, Zeta’s, and SGHRho’s.  There were Friends and Family.  And most importantly there was you!!!!

We started the day at Bro. Rev. Dr. Ozzie Smith’s Church, Covenant United Church of Christ, in South Holland, assisting with their food bank, and we moved about 500+ boxes of food, milk, bread, and other items  for their weekly Food Pantry.  We loaded 150 cars in record breaking time, before leaving for St. Ailbe’s.

We arrived at St. Ailbe’s at 10am to start the set up, and there were people already lined up and waiting in their cars for a 12pm start.  Brothers immediately went to work, all while social distancing and wearing their personal protection equipment.  We opened the gates at 12pm, and within the next 1 hour and a half, we gave out over 800 Meals, Groceries, Toiletries, and other items. Omega Charities purchased over 50,000 face masks and sent 2500 of them to Chicago for distribution.  While most were in cars, there were many that walked up with baskets and grocery carts. We also promoted the census in conjunction with NPHC-C.  At approximately 1:30pm, we marched to the center Island of Stony Island, to stand in silent protest for 8 mins and 46 seconds.  Cars, Buses, and Trucks blew their horns in support and solidarity.

I know naming people, I may inadvertently miss someone.  Please charge it to my head and not my heart, but I would like to thank:

Most of you have never heard of this Brother’s name, because he just crossed a week ago, but Bro. Kevin Freeman worked hard getting the items that we gave away, and his LB’s worked in his absence, since he was out of town this past weekend.  This is the definition of working HARD for Omega coming in the door.

Bro. Richard Keller and Bro. Greg Jackson, who helped manage the logistics

Bro. Lamar Ketchens for providing the Soundtrack and DJ’ing the event.

Bro. Ernest Woods, Bro. Dwight Mosley, Bro. Danny Randle for handling the ground game.

Bro. Jean Claude Aurel for providing the power from his truck until he got the generator up and running.

Bro. Alien Thompson for providing the additional gloves for the the workers.

Bro. Karl Bryant for taking photos.

and each and every Brother that came out and assisted in every way.

Thank you!!  The world was able to see Omega in a great light, and we helped fill a void.  Especially at a time when Black men need to be seen.

We will continue to fight for justice in our communities, but more importantly, it time for us to reshape where we live.  Stay Tuned, there is more to come!

Always in Friendship,
